Single And Looking VS Single And Loving It

Either stance could be reversed, without notice. The woman on the prowl every ladies night of the week can mysteriously awaken with a sudden epiphany. After running through every different kind of guy, perhaps it's time for her to stop looking for love and start loving her life, as is.

Just as easily, the self-assured single woman with no qualms being a party of one, might spend a day in the park and walk past the quintessencial couple, holding hands, absorbed in their own chemistry. Such a sight could quickly motivate Ms. Self-Assured to open herself to the possibility of love.

Most of us agree that neither approach is wrong. Still, it would be reckless for any woman prepared to go on the hunt for love, to not first be comfortable being a woman who walks into parties, restaurants, and other social functions alone. Far too many women allow minor insecurities to hinder them from socially blosssoming on their own. Solo. It's as if we believe that if we're caught dead on a Saturday night, standing on line at a movie theater, ready to purchase a ticket for one, someone will identify her as one of those lonely losers, too damaged to be loved by another. As if!

More often than not, the people standing in front and behind you don't give a damn who you are, or what you're buying. And, if they are looking, rest assured they're acknowledging one of your atributes, or, maybe checking out your purse.


Sometimes in a relationship, we can be so caught up in our beloveds we forget to nurture and appreciate the things that got our rocks off before they came along. Being in-between relationships is the perfect time to rediscover those passions you lived for, long before you found love.

Living Well and Spending Less (At the Same Time!)

The average one-bedroom New York City apartment is rented out for around $1,150 a month, give (usually) or take (rarely) a few hundred. And, if you've got a shitty job like I do, you're barely making that a month.

Money. Don't. Come. Easy.

Most of us transplant-tenderonies arrived to this city with stars in our eyes, cotton-candy dreams, and chump change in our back pockets. We might have a similar dating pattern and taste in clothes as Miranda or Carrie, but our mere scruples can't hold a candle to their dividends, let alone that of well-to-do millionaire wife Charlotte, or PR powerhouse Samantha. In the real world, trying to keep up with your bills, your kids, your family, and your man is more than enough, without having to worry about keeping up with the Joneses.

Nonetheless, every woman wants to live well and - occasionally, enjoy the finer things in life. It may seem impossible when you're in the midst of a financial crisis, but, if you follow our guide to being financially stress free, worrying about bills could be an all but played-out phase of the past. By reinventing how you have a good time out, focusing on what you already possess, all the while, working towards something in life that brings you not only money, but joy, you'll find that you've had access to the finer things in life the entire time!

We here at SSNY used this week as a warm-up for our upcoming "Budgeting in Your Borough" issue, following the official launch of ShesSoNewYork.com. We've been gathering information on any and every bargain store/cheap restaurant/bar with a great happy hour/sample sale/museum/breathtaking park/free show that we come across.

What we're trying to prove is that there's no price tag on living well. Don't worry about what name brand is stamped on the back of that cute top, just try it on! And yes, you can trick your lover into saving money and spending time outdoors exercising by suggesting a nice walk in the park would be romantic.

Life is too short and precious to constantly worry about bills and how much money you don't have. Instead, appreciate what you've already got and follow our guide to living well and spending less!

So, Let Us Tell You How We're Going To Change Your Life

"Let's do something to show how magical every woman is, no matter her job, shape, or handicap." That's how this whole thing got started. Portia and I were power-lunching in the Village as she described her ultimate idea - so fresh, it didn't even have a name. It was just a concept. A network. A way that women could inspire each each other, via our stories, experiences, and resources.

We started feeding off each others ideas until we pulled together something cohesive. A website, geared for New York City women - but, relevant to every woman, that would show off our many different lives, cultures, and passions.

And just like that, the ball got rolling.

We got in contact with long-lost friends and people we've only read about, everyoe being all-too-eager to sign on and give us their time. We came up with a name, ShesSoNewYork.com. And then, a staff. A street team. A photographer. Established actors, dancers, and other professionals. All of them, willing to give a part of themselves, with the hope that someone else could do something good with it.

By compiling articles, stories from real women from every burough, interviews from accomplished professionals, tips on how to get the most out of your life - no matter who you are or what you've got, and little antedotes here and there to make the day go by, ShesSoNewYork.com is going to fill a gap for the real, every day woman that's been vacant for far too long.

While you're reading this, Portia, myself, along w/ the rest of the SSNY staff are hard at work, getting ready for our late-summer launch. Consider this our home-away-from-home until then. We'll be using this blog to give you up-to-date information on what we're working on and how you can be a part of it!
